We've won an award for our Perry

January 2, 2017

The team is pleased to announce we took first prize in the East Anglian Cider & Perry Competition in late October 2016. The judging took place during the CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) Norwich Beer Festival held at St Andrews Hall, Norwich.

This award coincides with the expansion of our business from a small-scale operation producing around 750 litres of cider and perry a year (in 2015/2016) to a larger operation targeting 7,000 litres in 2016/2017. The cider is made from a local mix of dessert and cooking apples whereas the perry is made from pears.

There has been investment in a new apple press and related equipment coupled with increased staffing to four employees. The press replicates the traditional method of squashing the ground apple “pomace” using the rack and cloth method with the juice extracted by squeezing the pomace between wooden boards.

Ken Woolley, our chief Cider Maker, said, “We are very pleased to receive the Perry award. This is the 3rd award in three years of commercial operation. In 2014 we came 3 rd in the East Anglian Cider Competition for our draught cider called Cid’er’oad, so named as some of our apples were rescued from the sides of roads along the Norfolk/Suffolk border. Then in 2015 we came 1 st in the East Anglian Bottled Cider Competition for our Ice Cider which is essentially a dessert cider suitable with cheeses and puddings.“

The firm has moved to new premises at the Forge Business Centre in Palgrave, south of Diss, sharing space with the Hoxne brewery. Working alongside a brewery produces a good number of synergies as we will be supplying to similar retail outlets and pubs. Palgrave also falls in the Waveney Valley food and drink zone with scope in the future to showcase our products under a common initiative.
